“There are so many teaching moments I love, but one of my favorites was when a student who had struggled with reading all year finally read an entire book aloud to the class,” shared Krystal Ladnier, our Teacher of the Month from Breitling Elementary. “The look of pride on their face was unforgettable, and it reminded me why I do what I do. It’s moments like those that make the hard days worth it.”
Mrs. Ladnier has been teaching for 13 years and is currently teaching first graders who reside in Grand Bay, AL. She has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from the University of South Alabama and is graduating this month from the University of West Alabama with her Educational Specialist degree in Teacher Leader.
“I currently teach first grade, and I absolutely love it! I find this age group to be incredibly special because they’re just beginning to develop a love for learning,” Mrs. Ladnier shared. “The growth I get to witness over the course of the year is so rewarding. First grade is foundational—watching students go from barely knowing how to read to becoming independent learners is magical.”
Laid back and student-centered is how Mrs. Ladnier describes her teaching style. She works every day to create a fun atmosphere that encourages her students to take risks and make mistakes. Interactive games, hands-on activities, and incorporating projects into her lessons, allow her to keep students engaged in their lessons.
“I’ve always known that teaching was what I wanted to do,” said Mrs. Ladnier. “From a young age, I enjoyed helping others understand things. It feels natural for me to explain ideas and be a part of that “aha” moment when something clicks for someone else.”
The impact a teacher can have on a child’s life is something that drives Mrs. Ladnier every day. Being nominated for the Mobile Bay Parents Teacher of the Month Award leaves her feeling humbled.
“To know that others appreciate the work I do with my students is such an honor,” she said. “I also feel like this recognition is a reflection of the amazing team I work with—teaching is truly a community effort, and I’m just one piece of the puzzle.”
Krystal Ladnier has been married to her husband, Brian, for 19 years. He is an agricultural science teacher at Bryant High School. Together, they have two children – Phillip (14) and Peyton (10). The family enjoys boating together and spending time with friends and family.
