Every September, we have the privilege of putting together one of the issues that means the most to us—our annual Special Needs Issue, dedicated to supporting and celebrating families raising children with unique needs.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet so many incredible families through this issue. I’ve listened to parents share their stories, learned about resources I never knew existed, and been reminded again and again that parenting rarely follows a perfectly mapped-out path. Every child is different, every family is different, and every journey comes with its own challenges, joys, surprises and victories—sometimes very big ones and sometimes the quiet kind that only the people closest to them fully understand.
That idea is beautifully captured in one of this month’s features, “Celebrating the Quiet Wins of Neurodivergent Childhood,” by Shannon Dean. It’s a wonderful reminder that progress doesn’t always look the way we expect and that the moments that may seem small to someone on the outside can be absolutely huge to a child and family.
One thing I have heard repeatedly from parents over the years is just how difficult it can be to find the right resources. When you are already juggling school, work, appointments, therapies, activities and everyday family life, spending hours searching for help is the last thing you need.
That is exactly why our Special Needs Resource Directory is such an important part of this issue. Each year, we work to bring together local therapies, educational resources, recreational opportunities, support organizations and other services in one convenient place. Many of these resources have been shared with us by families themselves, while others have been researched by our team. It truly is a community effort, and we are always looking to make it better. If you know of a wonderful resource we have missed, please tell us! Your recommendation may be exactly what another family has been searching for.
We also have two more terrific features this month. “Tips for Playdates with Kids Who Have Special Needs” offers thoughtful, practical ideas for making playdates comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. I especially appreciate that it gives helpful advice for both sides of the invitation. Sometimes a little communication and understanding can make all the difference—and help lead to some pretty great friendships.
I always come away from putting together this issue having learned something new, and I hope you do too. More than anything, I hope families who need these resources find something helpful within these pages—and that the rest of us come away with a little more understanding, compassion and appreciation for the wonderfully different ways children experience the world.
