With 17 years of teaching experience, it is no surprise that Kristal Bush, a kindergarten teacher at Ariel W. Holloway Elementary School, was nominated as our Mobile Bay Teacher of the Month. This recognition follows her recently being named Holloway Elementary’s 2026 Teacher of the Year. Her nominees echoed her heart and willingness to go above and beyond for her students.

Mrs. Bush obtained her master’s in Elementary Education from the University of Mobile. Deciding on this career path was, without a doubt, one of the easiest decisions she ever made.

“My passion for education began long before I entered the classroom. I come from a family of educators. My grandmother was an educator, and my mother and all my mother’s sisters are educators as well. Even all of my sisters are serving within education,” Mrs. Bush shared. “Teaching is deeply rooted in my family, and I am proud to continue that legacy by educating and inspiring the next generation.”

Describing her teaching style as energetic, hands-on, and student-centered, Mrs. Bush believes students learn best when they are involved with the learning process. Incorporating movement, songs, games, group collaboration, and technology are just a few ways she intentionally prepares curriculum to make learning fun and meaningful for her class.

“I want my students to look forward to coming to school and to develop a genuine excitement for learning,” she said. “I believe that when students feel safe, supported, and engaged, they are more willing to participate, ask questions, make mistakes, and try again. My goals go beyond teaching academic skills; I want my students to also develop confidence, independence, curiosity, perseverance, and a love for learning.”

Being recognized, not once, but twice, over the past year has allowed Mrs. Bush to pause and reflect on her nearly two decades of teaching. Every day, whether challenging or rewarding, has shaped her into the educator she is today. While she does not teach for the recognition, she is grateful that her hard work is acknowledged.

“I am grateful for the educators in my family who helped shape the teacher I am today. I am grateful for the students who continue to teach me something new every day and to their families, who trust me with their children. Lastly, I am grateful for the Holloway Elementary School community for recognizing my dedication.”

Kristal and Kedric Bush have been married for nine years, and they have eight kids ranging from 28 years down to eight years old. As a family, they like to spend time taking road trips — mainly out of town to visit other family — or visiting Destin beaches. If not on vacation, you can find them at home relaxing around the pool.
